Opening 4

Day 4 of great film openings:

 The Departed: This opening makes great use of a monologue over the top of the action on the screen. Showing the audience footage of a fight in the street with the words “I don’t want to be a product of my environment”. This instantly sets the scene and shows that the narrator is clearly someone with a substantial amount of power in the film. After this we see a long shot of the city where the film takes place, this establishes a setting with the audience. The focus then shifts to a silhouette of the main antagonist, this is shown through a mid shot, however as his features aren’t clear at this point it is difficult for the reader to see if he represents good or evil.  The camera tracks him whilst the monologue goes on in the background.
