Great thriller soundtracks to potentially use for a thriller

Law Abiding Citizen

This soundtrack makes use of the contrast between softer moments in the film, and far more extreme and tense sequences. The beginning is soft and eerie, yet discordant and uses chromatic notes. This builds to the crescendo, which takes place amidst the action in the film. The drums underneath the violins replicate the heartbeat and the overall sound of the music is a building adrenaline. Taking place whilst the protagonists attempt to stop the antagonists plans.

American Gangster

This soundtrack doesn’t use the conventional style of playing to create tension. The overall sound is upbeat, reflecting the culture and the style of living that the main protagonist is living in at the time.  The soundtrack reflects the high-flying lifestyle that people in his position would be living; yet it also creates a contrast with the reality of other people’s lives that are not as successful. The song also has a singer over the top, which also gives the feel that the soundtrack is part of the film, rather than a use to increase suspense.

Looper

Looper’s soundtrack makes use of the futuristic environment to create an atmosphere of urgency. The soundtrack is minor, which emphasises a sense of threat.  The music is broken up which also works around the action of the film, it crescendos as the action builds.

The Grey

The Grey uses a delicate piano-led soundtrack to create the atmosphere of isolation in the film. The key is minor, and eerie, the piece is broken ip to show how the men in the film have been ‘abandoned’. The end motif builds in a crescendo showing the hope that is portrayed over the course of the film.

Batman: The Dark Knight

This soundtrack is to build suspense around the key action sequences of The Dark Knight film. It has the low string section playing staccato notes with a quick tempo to replicate the rise in adrenaline and also to give the audience a sense of this adrenaline. It is a very climactic piece and is to show a great build up of either tension or events coming together in the film.
