Every day this week I will be showing briefly some films with outstanding openings beginning today with Kill Bill!
Kill Bill: This intro begins with the shocking close up of the main protagonists face covered in blood in her bridal clothing. This instantly causes tension for the audience, as we are aware that she is in danger yet we are completely unaware why. The antagonist is speaking to her, yet we can’t see his face (and we can’t for the rest of the film). There are only diegetic sounds here and we can here the antagonists gun cock to fire, building tension because that noise is designed to scare people in film and we feel sympathetic for the protagonist because it is shown as an execution.
